Cheshire Tortoise Day!


         Saturday   18th May 2013     10 am-4 pm

This popular event is now in its 12th year with over 600 visitors in 2012.  The Cheshire Group of the British Chelonia Group (BCG)   who organise the day, plan the event to emphasize the educational and veterinary aspects of chelonia keeping as well as making it a fun day for children and their families.  The Cheshire Group invite tortoise keepers, vets, zoo keepers, conservation professionals and families to share chelonian experiences with experts from the BCG on hand for advice.  Aiden Raftery MVB CertZooMed  CBiol MSB MRCVS, vets and staff  will be in attendance from the Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic,  221, Upper Chorlton Rd., Manchester. The Clinic will provide a chelonia identification micro chipping service using mini chips.

Visitors can expect to see various live species of chelonia and other species on display, with examples of tortoise food plants which can easily be grown at home. There will be an opportunity to purchase high quality crafts and gifts, books, cacti from the Macclesfield and E.Cheshire branch of the British Cactus & Succulent Society who can offer expert advice on growing these fascinating plants.,   Free BCG tortoise care sheets will be available. Many items for sale have a tortoise theme. For children there are competitions, plus the tombola, raffle and new features for 2013 such as a Galapagos/ Darwin display. Light refreshments will be available throughout the event.  The afternoon lecture will present aspects of tortoise care.

The BCG works for tortoise, terrapin and turtle care and conservation. Funds from this event support chelonian conservation projects worldwide.
